Unavailability of arm veins

In the presence of contraindications to the positioning of a long-term access to the arm, it is advisable to consider a long-term venous access in the supra/infra-clavicular area (CICC); such a catheter must be tunneled (long-term protection from extra-luminal bacterial contamination) and also permanently stabilized, either by choosing a catheter provided with a Dacron cuff (polyethylene terephthalate) or by securing the catheter to the skin with a subcutaneously anchored system (SAS).
